NICOLE DUTU

Nicole Dutu is a Romanian writer, best known for her television acting career and for her work as a dramatist.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Nicole Dutu holds an MA in Creative Writing from City University London. She currently lives in Romania, where she devotes most of her time to writing. Dracula -The Kiss in the Black Church is her first novel.

Nicole Dutu has also authored over twenty stage plays. A selection of her work has been published in a theatre volume, and many of her plays have been performed in Bucharest and nationwide.

The themes in Nicole Dutu’s plays explore the complexity of human nature, focusing on the search for solace within human relationships. Her characters - comic or dramatic - are deeply concerned with finding meaning in their existence. Often caught  in moral cul-de-sac situations, they struggle to escape them or, at the very least, to justify their choices before their own conscience.

PLAYS

In 2005, “America Knows Everything” (America stie tot), directed by Radu Afrim, marked Nicole Dutu’s debut as a playwright at Theatre Luni, Green Hours, Bucharest.

In 2006, Nicole Dutu’s play “The Knot” (Nodul) was nominated for the UNITER National Competition for Best Play. A short version of the play was also performed at the Pleasance Theatre, London.

In 2007, “You’ll Be Back in Galapagos” (Te vei intoarce in Galapagos) premiered at the Theatre of Comedy, Bucharest.

In 2009, “Love Comfort 2” (Iubire confort 2) premiered at the Theatre of Comedy, Bucharest.

In 2017, “I Give the Money, I Make the Rules” (Eu dau banu’, eu dau ora exacta) premiered at Teatrul Principal, Bucharest, and was performed nationwide in Romania, remaining in repertory since its premiere.
